Kahlo's parents were photographer Guillermo Kahlo (1871–1941) and Matilde Calderón y González (1876–1932), and they were thirty-six and thirty, respectively, when they had her. Originally from Germany, Guillermo had immigrated to Mexico in 1891, after epilepsy caused by an accident ended his university studies.
Frida was very close to her father. Of the 4 daughters that he had with Matilde Calderón, Frida was Guillermo Kahlo's favorite. She saw him as an intelligent, brave man.
