James Demmel received his BS in Mathematics from Caltech in 1975 and his PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 1983. After spending six years on the faculty of the Courant Institute, New York University, he joined the Computer Science and Mathematics departments at Berkeley in 1990, where he holds joint appointments.

Jim Demmel (Fellow, IEEE) is the distinguished professor of computer science and mathematics with the University of California at Berkeley. He is the chair of the EECS Department. His personal research interests include numerical linear algebra, high performance computing, and communication avoiding algorithms in general.
