Francis Marion was born on February 26, 1732. He was one of six children born to Gabriel and Charlotte Marion.
In November 1780, Tarleton set out after his adversary, beginning a long and winding chase through about 26 miles of unforgiving landscape that ended in Ox Swamp, near modern-day Manning, South Carolina. Both commanders were determined, and both were hard fighters, but Marion knew the backroads and impassable swamps of this region well.
After General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered at Charleston in 1780, Marion turned to guerrilla warfare. Marion’s vigilance paid off when the British frigates attacked on June 28, 1776. The shells from the frigates had little effect because they were absorbed by the sand and soft logs that constituted the fort’s defenses.
Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” was born at his family’s plantation in Berkeley County, South Carolina in 1732. A planter, Marion built his home, Pond Bluff, in 1773 in the area of Eutaw Springs, a site now beneath the waters of Lake Marion.
