Richard Cromwell (born Oct. 4, 1626—died July 12, 1712, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, Eng.) was the lord protector of England from September 1658 to May 1659. The eldest surviving son of Oliver Cromwell and Elizabeth Bourchier, Richard failed in his attempt to carry on his father’s role as leader of the Commonwealth .
