Gordonstoun is one of the UK’s top independent schools for boarding and day pupils aged 4 ½ to 18. Our history. Our. history. Gordonstoun was founded in 1934 by the German Educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn. Our forward-thinking School has a fascinating past and much of what has been pioneered here has become part of mainstream education. Gordonstoun educated three generations of the British Royal Family.
Gordonstoun’s founder, Kurt Hahn, was keen to extend his educational ethos to the local community and not just those in the School. He therefore set up the Moray Badge (the precursor to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award) which started at Gordonstoun and Elgin Academy in 1936 and then spread to other schools in Moray.
