  2. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. A great statesman and historian, Clarendon served Charles II as secretary during his exile, and became his chief minister at the Restoration. He was much disliked, both for the moderation of his policies, and for his personal pomposity, and he was ousted from power in 1667 by the Cabal ministry.
