The sitter in this miniature has been identified as Henrietta Crofts (c. 1683-1730), one of the illegitimate daughters of the Duke of Monmouth, who became in 1697 the third wife of Charles, 2nd Duke of Bolton. Anne Vaughan, Duchess of Bolton (1689 – 20 September 1751), formerly Lady Anne Vaughan, was the wife of Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton. Although her married name was Powlett (or Paulet), she is generally known by her maiden name of Vaughan, under which name she was a signatory to Thomas Coram 's petition of 1729, which led to the foundation of the Foundling Hospital .

Lady Betty Charlotte (baptised 21 December 1686 at Chawton, Hampshire) Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton (24 July 1691 – 9 October 1759). He married Catherine Parry (d. 25 April 1744). The marriage resulted in the birth of Charles Paulet, 5th Duke of Bolton, Harry Paulet, 6th Duke of Bolton and daughters Catherine Paulett and Henrietta Paulett.

He was the second son of Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton and Catherine Parry. Educated at Winchester (1728–1729), he joined the Royal Navy, becoming a lieutenant aboard Shrewsbury on 4 March 1740.
