Anna Maria was the daughter of Duke Eric I of Brunswick-Calenberg (1470–1540) and Elizabeth of Brandenburg (1510–1558). She married in 1550 Margrave Albert I of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1490–1568), who had been created the first Duke of Prussia in 1525; she was his second wife. Albert died of the plague on 20 March 1568 at Tapiau Castle.

Maria Eleonora was born in 1599 in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), the daughter of Elector of Brandenburg Johan Sigismund and his wife Anna of Prussia. Her mother had a strong position as heiress to several areas of land and as a person she was both strong-willed and energetic.
Anna Maria war eine Tochter des brandenburgischen Kurfürsten Johann Georg (1525–1598) aus dessen zweiter Ehe mit Sabina (1548–1575), Tochter des Markgrafen Georg von Brandenburg-Ansbach. Sie heiratete am 8. Januar 1581 in Berlin Herzog Barnim X. von Pommern (1540–1603). Die Verlobung hatte im Jahr davor stattgefunden.
She was a daughter of John Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburg, and Anna, Duchess of Prussia, daughter of Albert Frederick, Duke of Prussia. In 1620, Maria Eleonora married Gustavus Adolphus with her mother's consent, but against the will of her brother George William, Elector of Brandenburg, who had just succeeded her father.
