The book began as an expansion of the first two chapters of On the Origin of Species: 'Variation under Domestication' and 'Variation under Nature' and it developed into one of his largest works; Darwin referred to it as his 'big book'.

  7. DC BD 834. DC BD 833 - This is the first issue of the first edition. Freeman in his listing says that there are 4 lines of errata in Vol. 1. In his editorial text he says that there are 5 errata but gives no number of lines - he does say that there are 9 errata in Vol. 2 in 7 lines. In fact there are 5 errata in 6 lines in Vol. 1.
