Elizabeth Cromwell was born at Hursley in Hampshire on 26 March 1650, daughter of Richard Cromwell and his wife, Dorothy Major. [1] In 1653 her grandfather, Oliver Cromwell, who had been instrumental in ridding the country of the monarchy was made His Highness,1st Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
