21 de jan. de 2024 · James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde, finally severed the 500 year Butler occupation of Arklow in 1714 when he sold the castle and over 8,500 acres to John Allen of Stillorgan for £1,140. Today, only fragments of Arklow Castle remain on the south bank of the Avoca River in Wicklow.

James Butler, twelfth earl and first duke of Ormond (1610–1688), lord lieutenant of Ireland, was born on 19 October 1610 at Clerkenwell, London, into the greatest of the old English families. Placed as a royal ward under the direction of the archbishop of Canterbury, he grew up a committed adherent of the Protestant Established Church.
James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond and 2nd Earl of Ossory ( c. 1496 – 1546), known as the Lame ( Irish: Bacach ), was in 1541 confirmed as Earl of Ormond thereby ending the dispute over the Ormond earldom between his father, Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, and Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire. Butler died from poison in London.
