Lady Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice was the elder daughter of the statesman Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, and his wife, Lady Maud Hamilton, daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn. She was married on July 30, 1892 to Victor Cavendish, the nephew and heir of the 8th Duke of Devonshire, becoming Duchess of Devonshire in 1908.
