The Defense of the Seven Sacraments (in Latin: Assertio Septem Sacramentorum) is a theological treatise published in 1521, written by King Henry VIII of England, allegedly with the assistance of Thomas More. Henry started to write it in 1519 while he was reading Martin Luther's attack on indulgences.

  5. It had evolved from The Institution of a Christian Man, which had been published under the supervision of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. In this new publication, Henry again asserted the presence of seven sacraments, as he had done against Luther in his publication, the Assertio Septem Sacramentorum of 1521.
