  7. COLLEGE NOTES Air Vice-Marshal Roy Austen-Smith was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1924. Ten years later he came to England where his parents made their home at Swanley in Kent. He was educated at Hurstpierpoint College and in 1943 joined the Royal Air Force after a short course at St Andrews University.
