The shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history was George Canning, whose premiership lasted a mere 119 days, before he died in office. The irony is that he could well have been one of the longest-serving — if it was not for his unbridled ambition and apparent passion for intrigue, which alienated both the King and his Cabinet colleagues, he might have been appointed 18 years earlier.
Having caught a chill while attending the funeral on 20 Jan. 1827 of his old enemy York, who was thus posthumously responsible for his lengthy last illness, Canning joined Liverpool in Bath, but nothing came of his expectations that the ailing prime minister would take this opportunity to resign in his favour.

On 9 April 1827 the Tory Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Lord Liverpool, suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. He had been Prime Minister nearly fifteen years, ever since the assassination of his predecessor Spencer Perceval in May 1812. The man chosen to succeed him was the Foreign Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons, George Canning.
George Canning was Foreign Secretary from 1807 to 1809, and again from 1822 to 1827, in which year he became Prime Minister for just four months before his death. Brought up by his uncle, Stratford Canning, he was educated first at Eton, then at Christ Church, Oxford.

Taking the position on the 12 of April 1827 after the previous Prime Minister, Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, suffered a stroke in office, Canning lasted less than 5 months before he caught pneumonia and died at Chiswick House on the 8th of August 1827.
