Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, KG, KP, PC, PC (Ire) (20 June 1760 – 26 September 1842) was an Anglo-Irish politician and colonial administrator. He was styled as Viscount Wellesley until 1781, when he succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Mornington. In 1799, he was granted the Irish peerage title of Marquess Wellesley.
Edit. Richard Colley Wellesley played a vital role in the consolidation of British rule in India during the Regency. In 1793 he became a commissioner of the Board of Control for India and in 1797 was appointed Governor-General of India. Wellesley pursued an aggressive policy of expansion, partly in order to reduce the French presence.
