A presidential system, or single executive system, is a form of government in which a head of government, typically with the title of president, leads an executive branch that is separate from the legislative branch in systems that use separation of powers. This head of government is in most cases also the head of state.

The New Zealand Parliament is specifically modelled on the Westminster system of parliamentary representation, developed in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This system can be traced back to the "Model Parliament" of 1295. Over the centuries, parliaments progressively limited the power of the monarchy (constitutional monarchy).

The Presidential system was first developed by the framers of the United States Constitution in the 1780s. The framers disapproved of the way in which the Prime Minister of Parliamentary systems could accumulate so much power.
System parlamentarny. System parlamentarny – system rządów opierający się na tzw. podwójnej egzekutywie, tzn. rozdziale funkcji szefa rządu i głowy państwa. System ten pozwala na łączenie funkcji w rządzie i parlamencie. Rząd zobowiązany jest do ustąpienia w wyniku otrzymania wotum nieufności w parlamencie.
