This portrait is now thought to be of Elizabeth Seymour (c.1518–1568), sister of Jane, third consort of Henry VIII and wife of Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell. By this time, Elizabeth’s husband, Sir Anthony, had died (1534), and, as a widow, Elizabeth had settled far away from the scene of her sister’s triumph, taking up residence in Kexby in North Yorkshire.
