L'abandon de la peinture d'histoire lui permit de concentrer ses efforts sur le portrait, comme en témoignent Francis Baring (1807, coll. part.) et les Enfants de John Angerstein (1808, Louvre). La mort de son rival Hoppner, survenue en 1810, le confirma comme chef de file du portrait anglais et lui attira les faveurs du prince régent, qu'il peignit à plusieurs reprises.

Cette œuvre, sans doute l'une des plus célèbres du peintre, représente un jeune garçon habillé de vêtements aux tons dominants de bleu, avec des nuances gris et argent, sur un fond nocturnal.
