The name dates from the accession of Edward VII, whose father Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, was a prince of the German duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. During the First World War, with anti-German feeling running high, George V changed the family name to Windsor.
Ernst I (1784-1844) was the first-born son of Duke Franz Friedrich Anton and Auguste Caroline Sophie. After his father’s death, he became Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1806. As the first duke of the newly created double duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he was the founder of the princely house of the same name in 1826.
