Carlow, Ireland (he died 1613) and her second was Sir Richard Preston, Baron Dingwall in Scotland who was created Earl of Desmond in Ireland on 22nd November 1622. Their daughter was Elizabeth, Duchess of Ormond who was buried on 24th July 1684 in the Ormond vault.

The marriage brought together the Ormond title and the lands and was effectively arranged by James’s grandfather who handed over £15,000 to Elizabeth’s guardian. The young married couple settled in Carrick-on-Suir, and in Kilkenny.

  6. Anne Hankford (c. 1431 – 13 November 1485) was the first wife of Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond (c. 1426- 3 August 1515). She was the great- grandmother of Queen consort Anne Boleyn. Anne Hankford was the daughter of Sir Richard Hankford and Anne Montagu. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Hankeford and Thomasine de Stapeldon.

  7. James Butler, 19th Earl of Ormond, 1st Marquess of Ormonde, 25th Chief Butler of Ireland (1774–1838) James was the brother of Walter, 18th Earl of Ormond. James was educated at Eton and became MP for Kilkenny City and County in 1796. In 1807 he married Grace Louisa Staples, daughter of John Staples of Lissan, Co Tyrone. They had ten children.
