Maria Salviati (1499-1543) was the daughter of a powerful Florentine banker and descended from Lorenzo de’ Medici on her mother’s side. She married her cousin the condottiero Giovanni de’ Medici (Giovanni delle Bande Nere) in 1516. After her husband’s death, Maria Salviati never remarried, dedicating herself to raising their son.

Optou pela ordem dos cardeais bispos e pela sé suburbana de Albano, em 8 de janeiro de 1543. Consagrado (nenhuma informação encontrada). Legado na Úmbria, 1543-1553.
Maria Salviati, as in other contemporary portraits of her, wears the clothes of mourning for her deceased husband, the famous military leader Giovanni delle Bande Nere de' Medici (d. 1526). The little girl holding her hand here is Giulia, a Medici relative who was raised in Maria's household after the murder of the child's father, Duke Alessandro de' Medici (1511-1537).
