  1. Ponsonby, Sir John (1608–78), soldier, was the younger son of Henry Ponsonby of Hale, Cumberland, and his wife, Dorothy, daughter of Henry Sands of Rottingham, also in Cumberland. He acquired land in Ireland, and was listed as a proprietor of 57 acres in the barony of Iverk in Co. Kilkenny in 1641, though he continued to reside at Hale Hall in Cumberland.
