He distinguished himself as a commander in Flanders and was created 19 October 1714 Baron Cobham of Cobham, Kent with remainder to his male children and on 23 May 1718 Viscount Cobham and Baron Cobham of Cobham with special remainder failing the heirs male of his body to his sister Hester and the heirs male of her body failing which to her sister Christian in like manner.
