Richard Monckton Milnes was born in London at Bolton Street, Mayfair on the 19 th June 1809. Biography. Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton was born on 19 June 1809. He was the son of Robert Pemberton Milnes and Hon. Henrietta Maria Monckton-Arundell. Milnes was a persistent suitor of Florence Nightingale (who finally refused to marry him), and one of her staunchest supporters along with the statesman Sidney Herbert.
