He was made 1st Duke of Wellington in 1814. He rose to military prominence after winning the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo (1815).
Napoleon abdicated and was sent into exile on the island of Elba. Hailed by the public as the nation’s conquering hero, Arthur Wellesley was rewarded with the title, Duke of Wellington.
