He was the son of Sir Edmond Butler and Lady Joan FitzGerald, and married in 1327, Lady Eleanor de Bohun, daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford by his spouse Elizabeth Plantagenet, daughter of King Edward I of England.
