  2. In centuries past, promising young gentlemen were sent to Hawkshead Grammar School for their educational foundation. Among the former pupils was a certain William Wordsworth, who attended the school from 1779 to 1787 – you can still see a desk where the naughty young poet carved his name.

  5. 18 de jul. de 2021 · Sandys was born in Hawkshead in 1519 and rose to become Bishop of Worcester, Bishop of London, and finally Archbishop of York in 1576. He was one of the men responsible for translating The Bishops Bible in 1568. The Grammar School is still housed in the attractive 16th-century whitewashed building where it was founded.

The ground floor classroom still contains the same wooden desks covered in carvings (look out for Wordsworth’s name carved into one of them).
