    Stephen Fox (1704-1776) was awarded the title Baron Ilchester of Ilchester & Strangways of Woodsford Strangways in 1741 by King George II. This was followed by Lord of Ilchester & Stavordale, Baron of Redlynch in 1747 and finally Earl of Ilchester in 1756. The first Earl added his wife’s mother’s maiden name to become Fox-Strangways in 1758.
