The 5th Earl of Berkeley, a gambler and libertine, married his mistress Mary Cole, the daughter of a Gloucester tradesman, ‘very privately’ at Lambeth on 16 May 1796. Many of her cultural pursuits were linked to her own private theatricals, the most noteworthy of which were staged in the 1790s at Brandenburgh House, situated outside London.

An inscription in the top right corner names everybody in it. The painting shows us Elizabeth Craven, who was born a Berkeley, in company with her elder sister Georgiana and both of her brothers.
