MONCK or MONK, GEORGE, first Duke of Albemarle (1608–1670), born 6 Dec. 1608 at Potheridge, near Torrington in Devonshire, was the second son of Sir Thomas Monck, knt., by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Smith of Maydford in the same county ( Gumble, Life of Monck, 8vo, 1671, p. 1; Visitation of Devonshire, 1620, ed. Colby, pp. 188-91).
On April 22, 1735, Thomas Monck, one of the eight Lord Proprietors at the time, acquired 1,000 acres. Moncks named his property “Mitton” and it was on part of this property that the first village of Monck’s Corner was formed. Shortly after, the locals removed the possessive form and “Monck’s Corner” became “Moncks Corner.”.
