His political intrigues led to his execution for treason and thereby contributed to the downfall in 1549 of his elder brother, Edward Seymour , duke of Somerset, who was lord protector (regent) for the young king Edward VI .

He was also the fourth husband of Catherine Parr who was the sixth and last wife of Henry VIII. Thomas was the son of Sir John Seymour and Margaret Wentworth.
