And although Japan currently dominates a large portion of the console gaming market now with Nintendo and Sony, video gaming console's roots actually lie in the United States, where Ralph Baer first conceptualized "interactive television" in the 1950s while building a television from scratch.
This generation saw the home consoles ease restrictions on cross platform play, allowing people on different consoles to compete when playing the same games with multiple versions across console and PC. Many Eighth generation home consoles and handhelds supported social media features in the console operating system.
The eighth generation of consoles includes consoles released since 2012 by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. For home video game consoles , the eighth generation began on November 18, 2012, with the release of the Wii U , and continued with the release of the PlayStation 4 on November 15, 2013, and the Xbox One on November 22, 2013.
