Caroline of Brunswick. Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Caroline Amelia Elizabeth; 17 May 1768 – 7 August 1821) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821 as the estranged wife of King George IV. She was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820.
Princess Mary was born at Buckingham Palace on 25 April 1776, the tenth child and fourth daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte. Many of Princess Mary's years before her marriage in 1816 were spent caring for members of her family; it was Mary who took primary responsibility for the care of her younger sister (and her father's favourite), Princess Amelia.
Princess Charlotte was the daughter of one of the most unhappy royal unions in history, that between George, Prince of Wales, and Caroline of Brunswick. When George first met his fiancée, he demanded a stiff brandy, and – quite a few drinks later for much of his wedding night – lay sprawled in a drunken stupor, his head in the fire-grate.
