Thomas Gage nasce nel Sussex nel 1719 (o nei primi mesi del 1720), secondo figlio del Primo Visconte di Gage. Dopo gli studi si arruola nell'esercito e nel 1743 ottiene il grado di capitano e diviene aiutante in campo del Conte di Albemarle , dopo aver preso parte a diverse battaglie nel 1755 viene mandato, con il grado di tenente colonnello, a combattere in America nella guerra Franco-Indiana .
Thomas Gage’s parents found it expedient to convert to the Church of England in 1715, but though they resumed the old faith before their deaths, their son was raised and remained an Anglican. He attended Westminster School in London and subsequently entered military service; by 1743 he was a captain in the 62nd Foot.
Gage was born to a father of the same name, the first Viscount Gage, and his wife, Benedicta Maria Theresa Hall, in 1719/1720, in Gloucestershire, England. Viscount Gage was born Catholic, but he and his wife converted to the Anglican Church prior to the birth of Thomas.
