Eckersley became the second pitcher ever to record 50 saves in a season, following Bobby Thigpen’s then-record 57-save campaign of 1990. Eckersley would end the 1992 season with 51 saves. He was that year’s recipient of the American League Cy Young Award, receiving 19 of 28 Baseball Writers’ Association of America first place votes.
