The University’s first purpose-built library was begun in approximately 1320 in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, in a room which still exists as a vestry and a meeting room for the church. The building stood at the heart of Oxford’s ‘academic quarter’, close to the schools in which lectures were given.
Music. The Music Collections of the Bodleian Library comprise about 500,000 items of printed music, 60,000 books and periodicals, 3,500 music manuscripts, and 1,000 microfilms, making it the second largest music research library in Great Britain. The Music Faculty Library holds the main collection of sound recordings in the University.
