Walter Baldock Durrant Mantell (11 March 1820 – 7 September 1895) was a 19th-century New Zealand naturalist, politician, and land purchase commissioner. He was a founder and first secretary of the New Zealand Institute, and a collector of moa remains.
Scientific description and naming The first illustration of the South Island takahē from Gideon and Walter Mantell's notice of the discovery in 1850. Anatomist Richard Owen was sent fossil bird bones found in 1847 in South Taranaki on the North Island by collector Walter Mantell, and in 1848 he coined the genus Notornis ("southern bird") for them, naming the new species Notornis mantelli.

Biografia Infância. Walter Henrique da Silva nasceu como caçula entre seis irmãos. Walter Mantell was the second son of Sir Walter Mantell, who lived at Nether Heyford in Northamptonshire, and his wife Margaret Wood. In about 1547 he married Jane Hales and in about 1550 his father-in-law Sir James Hales became his stepfather by marrying his widowed mother.
