Rancière studied philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris under the structuralist Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser.

Jacques Rancière se inició con libros sobre el mundo obrero: La Parole ouvrière, La Nuit des prolétaires o Le Philosophe et ses pauvres. Como discípulo de Louis Althusser, participó además, junto a Étienne Balibar, Roger Establet y otros, en la escritura del trabajo colectivo Para leer El capital (1965).
