How the conflict of a nation was captured by a politically reluctant poet. One of the most powerful political poems of the 20th century was written by a man who was ambivalent about politics. William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) began his career under the spell of the late Victorian era. Art in that time was generally more romantic than worldly.
William Butler Yeats, mais conhecido por W.B. Yeats nasceu em Dublin em 13 de junho de 1865 no condado de Kildare de pai irlandês e mãe anglo-irlandesa. A família era dedicada às artes (o pai e irmão eram pintores e as irmãs faziam parte do movimento Arts and Crafts) mudando-se para Londres em 1870 mas devido a razões financeiras mudaram-se para Dublin, em 1880.
William Butler Yeats is best known for his poetry and plays that focus on mythology, mysticism, and spirituality. He took inspiration from his Celtic roots and drew from Irish folklore. Impressively, Yeats won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, putting him down as one the most influential poets of the 20th century.
