Hendrik Verwoerd. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd (8 September 1901 – 6 September 1966) was Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 to 1961, and then president from 1961 to 1966. He was the person chiefly responsible for apartheid. [1] He was born in the Netherlands. His parents emigrated to southern Africa when he was two years old. [2]

Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 8 September 1901. He was the second child of Anje Strik and Wilhelmus Johannes Verwoerd. His father was a shopkeeper and a deeply religious man who decided to move to South Africa in 1903 because of his sympathy towards the Afrikaner nation after the South African War.
