The idea of recovering, or literally re-covering, the Punch and Judy show as a sort of fable about marriage and the battle of the sexes (read domestic violence) – is a proactive starting place. And, true to the 17th century original (the concept was imported into England in the 1660s from Italy), the show has Mr Punch enthusiastically whacking his wife Judy, both via the puppets and backstage.

Judy and Punch (2019) Nicht nur der Name des von Land umgebenen Ortes Seaside ist skurril. Auch die obsessive Beobachtung aller weiblichen Bewohner und deren Verfolgung als mögliche Hexen bewegen sich auf dünner Linie zwischen tragisch und absurd. Dorthin kehrt das Marionettenspielerpaar Judy und Punch mit ihrem neugeborenen Baby zurück.
A twisted tale of love, revenge and puppetry. In the anarchic town of Seaside, nowhere near the sea, puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit due to Judy’s superior puppeteering but Punch’s driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge.
Punch and Judy. Tyrannique, égoïste, prétentieux, méchant, insupportable, Mister Punch est un personnage complètement amoral. Les situations du spectacle sont simples, voire élémentaires : il croise le chemin de sa compagne Judy et de leur bébé, d'un policier, de la mort et de bien d’autres personnages.
