Johann Ludwig von Wallmoden wurde am 27. April 1736 in Hannover geboren und offiziell als drittes Kind des Freiherrn Adam Gottlieb von Wallmoden (1704-1756) und seiner Frau Amalie Sophie Marianne, geborene von Wendt (1710-1765), in das Taufregister eingetragen. Tatsächlich war er ein leiblicher Sohn des Königs Georg II., der mit Amalie ein außereheliches Verhältnis unterhielt.
