Chapter 11 : Countess of Lennox. On 26 th June, 1544, Henry and Lennox entered a treaty for the marriage. In return for Lennox abandoning his claims to the Scots throne in favour of Henry, his French estates, and betraying Dumbarton and Bute to the English, he was to receive Lady Margaret Douglas in marriage, and a handsome estate.
Margaret, named after her mother, was the daughter of Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England and widow of James IV of Scotland killed in the battle of Flodden in 1513. She had remarried the nineteen year old Archibald, Earl of Angus greatly to the fury of her late husband’s cousin, John, Duke of Albany, acting as regent since his death.
