In 1992 werd Alex door Lou Pearlman gevraagd om lid te worden van zijn nieuwe jongensgroep. Dat wilde hij wel en zo was de eerste Backstreet Boy gevonden. AJ McLean werd al snel gekenmerkt als rebel / “bad boy” van de Backstreet Boys.
