SN 2602. Westley Richards is one of the oldest firearms manufacturers in England. Founded in Birmingham in 1812, the firm opened a shop in London two years later. Westley Richards is credited with being the first gunmaker to use a toplever fastening system for its breechloading sporting arms, having adopted this system as early as 1860.
First, the .425 Westley Richards cartridge was what the British referred to as a “large medium-bore.”. Considering their largest rifle cartridge was the .600 Nitro Express, to say nothing of 8-, 4- and 2-bore elephant guns, their ideas of large and medium were different than ours. For elephant hunters, large bores began at .450.
Westley Richards seems to have ceased production in 1868. Westley Richards Arms & Ammunition from 1870 to 72 apparently made no ‘tails and morphed into National Arms & Ammunition Co Ltd, who restarted production still using locks made by T. Rigby and J. Riley. Barrel Makers Millward continued until NA&A production was started.
