President Mandela visited Magdalene in 2001, where he met some of the holders of the College's Mandela-Magdalene scholarships. His legacy at Magdalene continues to grow, with the establishment in 2017 of the Magdalene Mandela Memorial Fellowship alongside the first Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa, generously endowed by the Jonathan and Jennifer Oppenheimer Foundation.
Sister College. Magdalene College Cambridge’s sister college is its namesake, Magdalen College, Oxford. Despite the differences in spelling, both colleges pronounce their names as Mawdlin. Magdalen was founded in 1458 and is the 4th wealthiest of the Oxford colleges. This seems a little ironic given Magdalene College’s financial woes.
Magdalene College has the advantage of an attractive and convenient location on the banks of the River Cam, with the longest waterfront of all the Cambridge Colleges, and less than 5 minutes’ walk from the city centre. With an intake of around 105 new undergraduates each year it is possible to get to know all your fellow students!
