And secondly, it indicates that we have to utter a long vowel before the ß, whereas we utter a short vowel before a double-s. For schools in Germany there are federal regulations that define how pupils learn to write. Most widely used are the "Lateinische Ausgangsschrift" and the "Vereinfachte Ausgangsschrift".
