Catherine of Austria (Polish: Katarzyna Habsburżanka; 15 or 25 September 1533 – 28 February 1572) was one of the fifteen children of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. In 1553, she married Polish King Sigismund II Augustus and became Queen consort of Poland and Grand Duchess consort of Lithuania.

In 1565, Catherine returned to Austria and lived in Linz until her death. Sigismund died just a few months after her, bringing the male line of the Jagiellon dynasty to its end. The dynasty would continue, strictly speaking, for one more reign—that of Sigismund Augustus’ sister, Anna Jagiellon , who was crowned with the male title of Rex Poloniae.

Born in 1507 after the death of her father, Felipe el Hermoso, the younger sister of Carlos V married Juan III of Portugal in 1525 and died in 1578. Gifted with an energetic character, she took on the regency of Portugal in the name of her under-aged grandson, Sebastián.
Anne was a daughter of Charles II of Austria and Maria Anna of Bavaria. She was the grandchild of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anne of Bohemia and Hungary (1503–1547). Her mother was an important supporter of the Counter-Reformation in Inner Austria, who gave her children an upbringing focused on Catholicism.
