William Ewart Gladstone was born on 29 December 1809 at Rodney Street, Liverpool. He was the fourth son and fifth child of a family of six born to Sir John Gladstone and his wife Anne Mackenzie Robertson. Sir John Gladstone made his fortune in trade especially with America and the West Indies: it was there that he owned sugar plantations.
